Learning to skate together. Ain't nothing to it, but to do it.
Road to Backside Air: Episode #7 - Rough Day
Not every session features a major breakthrough and not all sessions are even good ones. Gotta take the bad ones to get the good ones though! NOTE: Don't go the skatepark the day before you're supposed to go to Yosemite. Just wait.

I came into this session on a mission fix my foot position, fix my pump, and pop higher on the transition. Wasn't feeling great half way through, but managed to land my first air under coping!

Totally agree! I need feeble fakie to warm up myself 😅
Any time I’m learning a new fakie trick I have to run through the progression: feeble fakie>pivot fakie>blunt nose grab fakie>blunt fakie.
Nice! 🤙
Good effort dude - keep at it & I know it can be scary but you have to go faster.
Speed is key to alot of skateboarding
Speed is key to alot of skateboarding
You meed more speed bro. Its easier to balance
You’re definitely right. When I go faster I’m having trouble staying over the board so I’m trying to work my speed up now.
Yeah speed and wax but you’re doing more than me at 27 so props brother
Thanks, dude!
Try it with more speed
Hopefully I can speed it up a little now that I know I can land it.
That rail waxed up?
Yeah, it’s pretty dirty but I put a new layer of wax on top haha. Slides fine on back boards I just need to get comfortable going faster.
I’ve always hated bs air so much I don’t ever even do them
I feel like this is a bold take haha. Why don’t you like them?
Huge dub
Thanks, dude. Can’t wait to get some longer ones!
Keep it up buddy
Thanks, man!
Hes not your buddy, friend
I disagree. Just saying it's "switch" doesn't make it true. There's much more to switch than the direction you're heading. If you can't tick tack and fakie nollie comfortably, you're not truly riding switch. Fakie rock and rock to fakie are the basis of ramp skating after learning to pump and kick turn, why the need to "make it sound cooler"?
I don’t think you’re wrong. Like I mentioned, I always called this trick “fakie rock,” but standard naming conventions have shifted towards calling it switch rock. Kind of like the debate of calling a fakie kickturn/pivot rock, “half cab rock,” despite your back wheels never leaving the ramp. I think it’s a little harder to define fakie and switch on transition lip tricks compared to flat ground or street as most switch or fakie tricks could be described the other way around. For example, what makes a fakie pivot fakie different than a switch nose pivot? Is it a switch blunt or a fakie nose blunt? When you drop in from your nose, do you call it a switch drop in or fakie drop in? I think I actually like “fakie rock” better because it’s so close in the progression to fakie tail stall that it just makes sense and, like you say, is a foundational trick that doesn’t require an ability to skate switch. At the end of the day, all the names are made up, so I think as long as we follow some sort of rule we all can understand then we’re good haha.
My buddy had a mini ramp at his house and we spent house just chilling❤
It was always a dream of mine! When are you free? Haha
Nice I am finally to that point. To do this. I can axle stale and rock to fake and come in disaster. Now time to step it up.👍🤙
That’s pretty much where I was at when I started learning them! Only other trick that might be worth adding is bs 5-0 stall/pivot. Let me know how it goes!!!
What a ramp! And those look great man it’s your style and take them how they come!
Appreciate that, dude! One day I’ll have to accept that but not yet haha
🔥
Style comes with time. They aren't bad.
Appreciate it! I’ve had this trick for a few years still waiting for the style haha. Last one’s not too bad, just got to get better control…
Your so underrated! Keep up the work!! ❤
Thanks, dude! Appreciate it!
Sweet line man \m/
Thanks, dude. Feels good to be skating.
I always tell people this is the best way to practice manuals
That's what I'm hoping!
I try to keep my front foot flat to the ground so I can angle it out to push the board down and in to balance it up. A little twist of the ankle - only connecting the board to my pinky toe - made a huuuuuuuuge difference. Especially once you start to nose manual
Yeah, I feel like I have no idea what to do with my front foot so this helps. Thanks!
Wait till you can ollie into it❤😊
That's what I'm going for!
love to see it! 🔥
Thanks, man!
Hey, that looks like a good base. Try to make your front foot and especially your knee as lightt and flexible as possible. Dont balance with your whole body. Your upper body and back foot will be as stable as possible, while your front leg is doing the job. you can try to just use the outside edge of your front foot shoe and your knee to balance. give it a try and keep on skating!
Thanks, dude! I like the idea of using the edge of my front foot to help balance and keep my foot light. I'll mess with this later.
I got really good manuals because I would practice on carpet stationary. You can do it on grass or rocks
I like this idea. I saw a video, I think it was Dan Corrigan, where he talked about practicing a bunch stationary. I've always heard its easier with speed, do you feel it translates from the carpet to when you're moving?
@@GrawrDa little bit, but soft surfaces like carpet and grass can’t really teach you the balance reaction required on smooth surfaces. It is a great practice tool though
Try not to hang your toes over the board for better balance
Thanks, I’ll mess around with that! I was in Ollie position at first and when I moved my foot up to the pocket I think my toes snuck off the side.
Niice
Thanks, dude!
yk man i’ve been skating for a bit and i can’t do shit either 😂, i may try to learn the manual j bc of seeing this dude
hahaha it's time, dude. Gotta live life on two wheels...
Bro I so want a mini ramp in my back yard so bad. Awesome man
Thanks, dude! It's definitely a game changer. Never thought it would happen but, once I had the space, I had to go for it.
Slams are nasty. So grabbing the nose is the key. Good job!
I definitely wouldn't have landed it again if I didn't suck it up and grab the nose!
Hell yes!! Love this mini ramp! Looking comfortable out there bro! Skate4life!
Thanks, dude!
What did you get and how easy is it to use? I’ve been thinking about getting one
Got the insta360 x4. Only played with it a little bit but there are lot of cool features that make taking advantage of the 360 view easy. Like for this clip, it tracked me the whole time I didn’t have to do anything! I’m not sure how I feel yet because, especially at night, there is some trade off in video quality versus my other camera, but it’s really hard to beat these more dynamic shots and the ability to get both sides of the ramp without a filmer. Hoping I get enough use that it becomes more than an expensive toy.
Hoping to try some flat ground/ street stuff soon to see how that looks.
Guegas mui bien 😊
Killing it dude!! Sorry for the slam tho!!
Thanks, man!!! Part of the game haha. Just amazing how whatever part of you that’s hurt is what somehow finds the ground first.
@@GrawrD your not kidding threw my back out earlier today picking my kid up. How embarassing!! 🤣🤦♂️
@@fatdadskatesbad hahaha too real.
What height and radius is that mini?
3 ft with a 6 ft radius. Feels just about perfect!
I have a 2 foot garage ramp with 6 foot radius that I think I have sort of outgrown. Can’t decide if 3 or 3.5 would be the next best upgrade.
@@accn69 if you can try and skate a mellow 5ft. It's probably the most common mini in my experience. A whippy 5ft is a bit gnarly for learning, probably a no go if you're used to more mellow ramps like me. It can be intimidating but shallow ramps will block your progression if you never take them to bigger ramps, where many tricks are actually easier. Rock to fakies and rock n rolls are really hard tricks on smaller ramps for example. Blunts too I believe but I can't blunt.
@@accn69 if you're able to do bread and butter tricks on a 2ft then don't waste your time with a such a tiny upgrade. You're probably looking for something steeper at the coping. You could get a really whippy 3ft, but I feel like those make good quarters and your legs would burn off trying to skate a mini like that
I am at a similar stage but i am focused on power slides... I have a similar attitude, no idea how far the vert journey is going to last but dam its fun and its an insane workout! keep it up!!! how tall is the ramp?
Thanks, man. It’s addicting! This ramp is 10’ and I’ve been skating a bowl closer to where I live that’s 11’. Took a slam that sprained my knee and wrist so I’ve had to take a break but can’t wait to get back out there!
Heck yeah! 💕👏🤙
Thanks, man! Going to have to circle back to your wood rot video to fix a beam on the front of my house...
@@GrawrD You're welcome. Ohh awesome 😆 yeah for sure, it's a good fix in mild climate like California and on pieces that aren't easily replaceable or only slightly rotted
You need to loose weight. Go to the gym. Great work. Cheers
Good speed!
Hell yeah brother, skate or die ✊
Ain’t nothing to it, but to do it!
The celebration dance! 😄🙌
I think that's half the reason I landed it...
Love your 5-0s.
Appreciate it! Best feeling grinds in my opinion.
@@GrawrDyeah they look sick dude.
Thanks, man. Both 5-0s were always dream tricks for me so it's awesome to have them consistent.
Hope the knee recovers quick. The 5-0 grinds to fakie are so good!
Thanks, man! Think it'll be okay as long as I stop slamming into it haha. 5-0 fakie is a trick that never gets old, feels awesome.
Nice line tho
Thanks, man! Would have liked to end it on a better trick but I’ll get it when the knee is healed up.
Ooh.. that sound 😮. That’s how I felt this morning. I was off of a board for 20 years and just started up in March. I’m sore as hell and still get out there when I probably shouldn’t.
Yeah, man. It’s an addiction haha. I think I’ve watched all the skate videos on UA-cam sitting on the couch so I just want to skate!
i fwu gang
Appreciate you
I'm surprised you don't wear wrist guards. Mine have saved me a tonne.
I normally do! I started taking them off because it’s easier to grab but I knew it would come back to haunt me eventually haha. Maybe I’ll rock just the left one…
@@GrawrD yeah I know what you mean. If I try grab stuff I have to take mine off. I prefer not wearing pads but injuries are a lot more problematic at this age. You are doing great on those bs ollie's.
skate or die brotha! heal up!
Thanks, dude! Ain't nothing to it, but to do it!
pivot fakie on that thing is crazy good stuff dude
Thanks, man! That was the trick I really wanted it so it felt awesome.
